Wow, it's been a while! - お久しぶり！

Wow, it's been quite a while since I updated my blog!  I apologize for my inactivity for the past few months, the deadlines at work were looming and a quick rush to get things done were in order.  The second season of TMNT has been a challenging where expectations have been raised to make the most entertaining, action-packed TV cartoon on air.  If you are enjoying the first season, please make sure you follow up on the second one... you won't be disappointed!

If you haven't noticed yet, I have updated my demo reel as well.  You may watch it at the top of this blog, which is a video sourced from Vimeo.  I worked on an acting piece at home (which I haven't done in years) and have also included it in my demo reel.  With feedback from much more experienced television and feature animators, I managed to create an acting piece that I really enjoyed.  However, there is still much for me to learn about subtle acting, so I'll have to create another acting shot soon.

I've enjoyed my long weekend by celebrating Canada Day in Vancouver!  I hope you all have a wonderful summer.

お久しぶりでございます！中々アップデート出来なかったので本当に申し訳ありません。。。締め切りによく追われていましたので。

TMNTの第２シーズンは今よりもっとアニメーションの質を求められていますので、残業が多きなっている日々ですが、頑張ってシーズン１よりもっとアクション抜群でとっても面白い番組になると思います。期待してくださいね！

ついでですが、デモリールも更新しました。このブログのトップで見られますので（Vimeo）、よかったら是非見てください。今回は自宅で作った演技アニメーションも入れました。もっと経験のあるTV/映画アニメーターにアドバイスなど頂いて作りましたので、楽しく制作することが出来ました。まだまだ繊細な演技には経験不足ですので、今後のアニメーションにもっと積極的に挑戦したいと思っています。

今週末はCanada Dayの三連休でしたので、のんびりとすごすことが出来ました。皆さんも夏休みを楽しんでください！

Today's Sketches

It's been a while since I updated my blog!  But things are settling down at work, so I have a few updates.

I will continue to work on TMNT Season 2 in Vancouver!  I am very excited to be still part of this wonderful project with such talented animators in the industry.  There are so many young and veteran animators that are very creative and determined to make some amazing work in Vancouver, and by learning from them it really helps me push myself even more to get better in my skills.  I am hoping another year with this amazing team will develop my understanding of animation to another level. 

I am also considering taking an online program soon, so I may not be able to update the blog as frequently as I hoped.  Fortunately I am making a habit of doing my daily sketches, so I will do my best to post more sketches.  I hope I am improving on a daily basis :)

一ヶ月ぶりの更新です。やっと仕事場も収まったと思いきや、中々アップする時間がありませんでした。

今月からTMNTのシーズン２に参加することになりました！バンクーバーには沢山の若い優等生やアニメーターのベテランがいますので、彼らから色々アニメーションの勉強できるので感謝しています。もう一年も頑張りたいと思っていますので、よろしくお願いいたします。

そして、今年からアニメーション専門学校にも通うかも知れませんので、これからもブログを更新する機会がすくなるかも知れませんが、毎日のスケッチは欠かしてはいませんので出来るだけアップしてみます。ちゃんと上達していればいいのですが。。。ｗ

Today's Sketch - 今日のスケッチ

It's been a while since updating as we are wrapping up our current episode at work.  I finally am starting to find the time to sketch on a weekly basis so here are some of my recent works I've done at home.  

ようやく仕事場が落ち着いてきましたのでスケッチしました。最近練習が足りないと思いましたね。。。今の番組も慣れてきたので、もっと書きたいですね！

Today's Sketch - 今日のスケッチ

Today I went for a quick 11min sketch and attempted an anime-style sketch as well.  I'm still feeling rusty for not drawing but I am really enjoying myself playing with different styles. I am hoping to finish the anime style drawing... if time permits me to complete it :) 

今回は１１分制限のスケッチとアニメ風スケッチに挑戦してみました。忙しいので最近はスケッチは出来てはいませんが、時間があればアニメのほうを完成したいと思っています。それにしても仕事の締め切りは大変ですね。。。

Today's Sketch - And Sad Story of R&H

I am heading into crunch time for our current episode, so unfortunately I haven't been as active on my daily sketching. Already I feel my rustiness as I drew this picture, but I have learned a lot regarding pushed perspectives.  As I am an animator that LOVES action poses, I am hoping to work harder to make some killer fighting doodles soon. 

Also, it is unfortunate to know that Rhythm and Hues have filed for bankruptcy.  Although I know the Vancouver studio is still open at this time, it may soon close its doors.  I send my condolences to everyone involved, and I hope they will find another active, supportive studio very soon.  

It is at this time that, though working in the animation industry is tough, that I am very grateful to still be working as an animator.  Never take anything for granted. 

今週からは締め切りラッシュに入りますので、残念ながらスケッチに励むことが出来ませんでした。最近やっていませんのでもう腕に錆を感じていますが、大胆なポーズに挑戦することに勉強になりました（もっと大胆に出来たかな？）私はアニメーターとしてはアクションは大好きなので、これからもかっこいい戦闘ポーズを書き上げたいです。

それから、残念なニュース：あの有名なRhythm＆Huesスタジオが倒産しました。。。現在バンクーバースタジオはまだありますが、時間の問題かもしれません。本当に残念です。スタジオの皆さんが早速次の就職が決まりますように、と願っております。VFX業界は不安定だと言われますが、それをもっと安定できることは無いのでしょうか。。。

こういう時こそ、大変な職業であっても、アニメーターとしての仕事があって生活が出来ると感謝と思えるという時期です。それを忘れずにありがたく考えようと思います。

Today's Sketch and A Sad Turtle

It has been a busy week with lots of overtime!  Good thing BC creteed a new holiday, Family Day!  Please enjoy the long weekend everyone... and don't work too hard like Raphael :) 

今週は残業が多かったので、中々アップデート出来ませんでしたが、BC州が今年から新しい祝日、Family Day　（家族の日）がありました。三連休は存分にゆっくりと過ごします。ラファエルみたいに働き過ぎないようにね！

Today's Sketch - 今日のデッサン

Here is my very first animation compilation video that focuses on a television series: Hot Wheels Battle Force Five!  Aside from the pre-production animation cycles, model assets and VFX (created by the talented artists of Nerdcorps Entertainment), I have worked on the layout and camera/character/vehicle animation in the show.  I hope you like it!



お待たせしました、初の映像集です。私がHot Wheels Battle Force Fiveに作った映像を集めて作りました。Nerdcorps Entertainmentの優秀なアーティスト達がアニメーションサイクル、モデリングとVFXに関わっていますが、レイアウト、カメラセットアップとアニメーションは私がやりました。

楽しんで頂けたら嬉しいです！

Workshop Update! - ワークショップ！

I apologize for not updating sooner than I promised...

I had an incredible time at Louis Gonzales' workshop studying how to draw appealing poses.  And boy, was it a learning experience!  It was challenging to think outside the box and work on drawing poses that will tell a story instead of drawing a figure that was posing in front of me.  There were many things to learn but it was amazing to learn that I need to push the boundaries of what I draw in order to express what I want to show to the audience.  I can't wait to apply this knowledge in my work soon!

I've also played around with an editing software to create my first compilation reel.  After working at Nerdcorps for a few years before going to another studio, I have finally managed to find shots I've worked on and decided to make a music video out of it.  Nerdcorps is the very first studio that I've worked for since I graduated from school.  I've learned a lot of new skills, made new friends, and worked on entertaining projects within a few years.  Thank you very much to everyone at Nerdcorps and hopefully we will work again in the future.

The first compilation video is Hot Wheels Battle Force Five - stay tuned!

更新するのにちょっと遅くなりまして、申し訳ありません。。。

日曜日のLouis Gonzalesのワークショップはとっても参考になりました。色々勉強になりましたが、何よりも一番印象に残ったのは、デッサンは目の前の物をそのまま書くことではなく、工夫を加えて「伝えたいもの」をもっと表すことでした。簡単に聞こえ、本当に難しいことだと思い知られましたが、これからも頑張ってポーズ・デッサンの練習に励みたいと思います。

そして、初めての映像集のビデオを作りました！卒業してから初めて働いた会社、Nerdcorpsのアニメーション番組のビデオを手にいれたので、楽しくミュージックビデオを完成しました。Nerdcorpsで働いたおかげでアニメーションの勉強出来まして、友達も増え、そして色んな番組に関わりました。本当に感謝しています。いつかまた働いてみたいですね！

最初の映像集はHot Wheels Battle Force Fiveです・・・近いうちにアップします。

Schoolism Workshop - スク－リズムワークショップ

今日のスケッチ！

Happy New Year!

Happy 2013!  I unfortunately had to be on a long hiatus to update this blog, as the studio was getting very busy to wrap up the first season of Nickelodeon's TMNT!  It has been a challenging but very rewarding experience, and I am extremely proud to be working on such a successful series with the talented animators in the city.

I also have a lot of updates to this blog.  First, my demo reel will now on appear at the very top of my blog!  I will do my best to update it with the latest works I've done in my animation career.  I'm hoping to make a series reel (video compilation of all the shots I've done for one TV show/movie) just for fun, but my reel for employment will stay at the top of my entire blog pages.  Please feel free to provide any feedback by send me a message or commenting on this post.

Also, I am really getting back into life drawing!  It is one of the few resolutions I've made for this year, and perhaps the only one that I will manage to maintain (knock on wood!).  I've been very rusty and haven't been drawing for quite some time, but I am eager to improve my analytic skills and have a greater attention to detail. Hopefully by sharing my drawings online it will further make me determined to be a much better drawer.

明けましておめでとうございます！もう2013年になってしまいました。

この数ヶ月はブログを更新出来なくて本当に申し訳ありません。。。会社ではTMNTのシーズンのフィナーレを作り上げている最中ですので、中々書けませんでした。しかしとってもやりがいのある仕事ですし、優秀なアニメーター達と働いているので本当に勉強になっています。

今年からは、自分のデモリールはブログの一番上に貼っておきました。これからも最新の手掛けた映像をデモに付け加えて更新していきたいと思っています。さらに、いままで参加したTV番組の作った映像のコンポレーションビデオも作ってみたいと思っていますが、それは別のポストで紹介します。ビデオに関するコメント・メッセージは歓迎します！

さらに、私はデッサンに励んでいます！今年の目標の一つで、とっても楽しくやっています。ずっとやってないのか、ちょっと腕が落ちたと落ち込みますが、これからもスケッチを沢山やり続け、デッサン力を上達していきたいと思っています。このブログで書いたデザイン・スケッチを載せたらもっと真剣にやり続けると考えていますので、楽しみにしてください！
